Ardrossan mural art exhibition

The contributory artwork and photography produced for the mural at the old St Peter’s school site will be on display for the public to view at the Ardrossan Youth Centre, Stanley Road, Ardrossan. It will be open to the public from 31st August until 2nd September, 2pm until 6pm each day. Entry is free.

In a project led by Irvine Bay as part of its award-winning education programme, pupils from Ardrossan Academy and young people from the Ardrossan Youth Centre Arts Group worked together with renowned local artist Alison Thomas to create a spectacular new mural to replace an earlier version which had faded.

Complete with moving parts, it depicts the coast and sea side of Ardrossan and the hills and scenery beyond and is a stunning part of the regeneration company’s plan to create a series of “coastal beacons” showcasing the area’s beautiful coastline.

The mural was completed in July 2010, and a small landscaped garden has been created in front of the mural by Scottish Training Foundation, providing training and skills development for local trainees.

Pupils from other local schools thought creatively about their coast line and compiled quotes about their favourite memories of the beach and the sea side. Parents and grand parents also provided quotes which are now etched onto granite plaques to form “Our talking wall” on the promenade at the sea front. Some of these quotes were used to inspire the mural artwork.

Thanks to McLaughlin construction who kindly constructed the fence on site, Local Youth Workers Wendy and Shelly who worked with the young people at the Youth Centre, and Principle Teacher of Art Harry Sutton who directed the work at Ardrossan Academy.

The mural work won the support of the Big Lottery and attracted funding from Awards for All.
