Saltcoats

The vision for Saltcoats is as a modern, up-market seaside resort – a good place both to visit and to live.  In the summer large numbers of people use the beaches on either side of the town and the strategy is to draw these people into the town by reinventing its role as a 21st century resort.

The Saltcoats regeneration plan includes proposals for revitalising the shopping streets, creating a business quarter and reconnecting the centre with the sea. Arts and culture will play a vital role, with galleries and cafes at the waterfront and in the town.

Kate McKinlay, Saltcoats Community Council:

The promenade, harbours and beaches are our biggest assets. Lets make them clean, safe and usable. Toilets and cafes, activities for kids and tourist facilities will all help attract people to our towns who will hopefully stop and shop in the central areas.

Once a seaside resort...

Saltcoats in Scotland is a seaside town with a population of 11,000, located between the neighbouring towns of Ardrossan to the north and Stevenston to the south. During the first half of the 20th century the town was a popular holiday destination – a feature of the local economy that has declined steeply since the 1960s. However, Saltcoats still maintains a significant town centre area providing a range of retail and leisure facilities, as well as a small harbour and beach front promenade. Together, these help the town to remain a popular day-tripper destination.
