Judy Murray helps launch the winning set of courts

Tennis fans and players were served up an ace when the newly refurbished Glebe tennis courts in Saltcoats were officially opened this month.

Tennis coach Judy Murray, mother of stars Andy and Jamie Murray, carried out the official ceremony with representatives from North Ayrshire Council, SportsScotland and Irvine Bay Regeneration Company on Sunday 17th October.

And youngsters aged between 7 and 16 years got the chance of a coaching session run by Judy, who has strongly backed the refurbishment, as part of the event.

The tennis courts at the Glebe have been upgraded to an all-weather surface and are now available for public use at no charge – thanks to Irvine Bay Regeneration Company, SportScotland and the fund-raising efforts of local supporters.

The regeneration company had pledged £50,000 to help meet the cost, provided the community could raise the other £30,000-plus required.

Fund-raisers got to work, an application to SportScotland was successful and the newly upgraded courts are now ready, providing a terrific facility for local children and adults.

Patrick Wiggins, Chief Executive of Irvine Bay Regeneration Company, said: “This has been a fantastic, community-led project which promotes healthy living and exercise. We are delighted to have played our part in creating a fantastic facility for the community.”

Alison Farrer, Chair of the Glebe Association, added: “The Glebe Tennis Association has been delighted with the support it has received from all concerned, and we thank Judy for her backing and her willingness to help us open the courts.”
