Will you marry me?
Irvine's Big Screen TV at Bridgegate Square was used to display a very special message today.
In what is believed to be a first in Scotland – if not the UK - the large, outdoor screen was used for a proposal of marriage.
On the morning of Monday 8th August, Peter Logue and Clare Hastings celebrated their anniversary of having been together for exactly seven years. To mark this special occassion and make it even more memorable, Peter had secretly made arrangements with Town Centre TV for a slideshow of photos and an anniversary message to be displayed on the large screen while he and Clare were at Bridgegate Square. However, she was unaware that the biggest surprise was yet to come - as, after the slideshow, a video message of Peter asking for Clare's hand in marriage was shown. Thankfully, Clare accepted Peter's very public proposal and the couple, who have a 1 year old daughter Ella, are now making plans for their big day.
The LED screen, measuring 7.68m wide x 4.32m high, was installed in 2014 as part of the award-winning Bridgegate Public Realm works carried out by Irvine Bay Regeneration Company and North Ayrshire Council. In addition to business advertising, it is the only public screen in Scotland to have daily slots dedicated to community content. This non-commercial content is delivered by Town Centre TV on behalf of Irvine Bay Regeneration Company and provides a platform for promoting volantary organisations and community groups in the area.
A spokesperson for Town Centre TV said "When Peter approched us with his plan we thought it was such a wonderfully romantic gesture and that we'd be honoured to help make it a reality. We currently offer a message service for birthday wishes but this was the first time we'd ever been asked to display a marriage proposal! However, this shows what's possible for the screen as a resource for the local community and may well prove to be the first of many more proposals in the future. We're absolutely delighted to have played a part in Peter and Clare's special day and we wish them all the very best for their future together."
Marion Francis, Project Manager at Irvine Bay Regeneration Company said, “This is what ‘community content’ is all about! The Big Screen was installed as part of the regeneration of The Bridgegate, and it’s the only screen in Scotland to run daily slots dedicated to community-driven content. Congratulations to Peter, Clare and Ella.”
The redevelopment of the Bridgegate was completed in 2013. The project has won a series of award
