Sea front artwork

Back in 2008 pupils from Ardrossan Academy painted a large mural on Ardrossan sea front at the derelict site of the old St Peters school.  The mural featured vibrant images taken from old pictures of the area.

Pupils also got involved in a landscaping project to create a small garden area in front of the mural, working with the Scottish Training Foundation as part of their SQA Rural Skills Award. The garden is planted with a variety of species that are suitable for a coastal environment and coloured gravel has been laid to imitate the sea and sand of a beach scene.

The original artwork deteriorated due to the weather, and we set about producing a new more permanent mural. Pupils worked with well-known local artist Alison Thomas on a project called 'talking images', which involved creative explorations of young people’s hopes. The mural is just one of a range of outcomes from this project and was completed in summer 2010.

An exhibition showcasing the contributory artwork and photography produced for the mural was put on display for the public to view at Ardrossan Youth Centre.

The mural work won the support of the Big Lottery and attracted funding from Awards for All.
