Pupils from St Anthony's Primary School, Saltcoats, St Matthew's Academy and Ardrossan Academy recorded their aspirations for their towns, some of which have been included as inscriptions on the new sea defences.
During summer 2008 we held a very successful event in Saltcoats town centre when we encouraged local people to share their thoughts and aspirations for the future of the town by leaving us a 'message in a bottle'. This project replicated the idea in the classroom.
We designed a workshop for pupils. The workshops encouraged the pupils to think about the future they want for their towns – how they want to feel, what they want to see and what they might hear in the towns. These ideas were then written down on postcards and collected at the end of the workshops.
The project called 'Our talking wall' uses a number of the quotes that were gathered, inscribed on to granite plaques and attached to the sea wall along the promenade at Saltcoats.
'Our talking wall' was officially unveiled on the 17 June 2010.
The project is one of a number of successful Irvine Bay education projects which are inspiring young people about their area and helping them to learn through the regeneration process.
