Irvine Bay has bought the former police station site in Irvine. This key purchase is an important step forward as most of the surrounding land is also in public ownership.
The Southern Gateway has now been confirmed by North Ayrshire Council as the preferred location for a new leisure centre to replace the Magnum. The site will play an important role in the urban regeneration of Irvine.
New state-of-the-art sports and leisure facilities are to be located at this prime town centre site, acting as a catalyst for further regeneration. North Ayrshire Council is investing £16 million in the new leisure centre which will include a swimming pool complex, multi-use sports facilities, fitness studios and a café. The town centre location is expected to draw local people and visitors into the town centre, encouraging the revitalisation of Irvine's Town House and the surrounding area.
Significant site investigation works have recently been undertaken. This has included the appointment of Kilwinning-based Rathmell Archaeology who will undertake a detailed examination of the site both before and during the works. Another key focus for the consultation programme has been in connection with the existing war memorial.
A number of design options have been considered and the finalised plans are expected to be submitted for approval by the council in February. Work on the construction of the new sports centre is schedule to start in summer 2012.
