Saltcoats town regeneration plan

The vision for Saltcoats: to promote a modern seaside resort and retail offer

The vision for Saltcoats that came clearly through the consultation process was to rejuvenate the retail and tourist offering in the town. For this to become reality, the plan must address the following issues:

  • The consolidation and improvement of the retail offer in the town centre
  • The development of an attractive waterfront that encourages tourism
  • The improvement of the physical appearance of the town
  • The enhancement of cultural and tourism based activities

Key development areas

Three key development areas have been identified in Saltcoats as the particular areas of the town where we need to focus attention, to maximise the impact of the regeneration process:

  • Town centre
  • Waterfront
  • Business quarter

Already important town centre projects are under way. A programme is underway to improve shopfronts in the town centre and more shops will be able get involved in the project during 2011.

The former Saltcoats station building has been brought back to life to provide new commercial space in the town centre and is now fully let, creating business opportunities in the Irvine Bay area and attracting inward investment to Saltcoats.

We believe that concentrating resources and investment in these key development areas will ensure that Saltcoats maintains its focus as the key shopping location within the three towns and reconnects the town centre with an improved waterfront.
