S2 Art and Design pupils at Kilwinning Academy are contributing to the regeneration of the town centre, with some creative murals. The modern creative artwork takes the form of murals painted onto ceramic tiles in the tunnels leading from the shops and Abbey to the car park area.
For the pupils the project will contribute to the new curriculum – a Curriculum for Excellence. Not only will the S2 pupils cover the curriculum but they will apply their learning in the context of the local area, gaining skills for life and work through meeting a real life design brief.
The theme for the art work is based on ‘Interpretations of Kilwinning’ and involves the expertise of an artist to support and guide the work.
A variety of techniques will be considered and it is hoped to take the pupils on a visit to Glasgow School of Art as part of the project.
An artist has now been appointed and pupils are currently working on their ideas. The tiling will be prepared and installed in time for the opening of the refurbished Kilwinning Main Street.
