Project status: In planning

Beach park, Irvine

We are considering ideas to redevelop Irvine Beach Park as a centre for recreation close to the beach, the harbour and a new golf course. With The Ayrshire to the south and Irvine Harbourside to the north, the development of the park will link in with the regeneration of the whole area.

The beach park offers tremendous panoramic views of the Ayrshire coast and over to Arran and the Ailsa Craig.  The park offers access through sand dunes onto a large stretch of sandy beach.

The park could be completely redesigned to create a new space, with better facilities and recreational opportunities, making the most of its setting and creating a real attraction for local people and those from further afield.

However plans for redevelopment will need to take into account the prevailing winds, the nature and extent of contamination on the site (from the former Bailey Bing) and any coastal environmental sensitivities.

Some of the possible ideas for redeveloping the park:

  • “Super Park” – with excellent play facilities
  • New board walks providing better access to the beach and along the beach through the sand dunes
  • New planting around the dunes and allowing the dunes to naturally spread back into the beach park
  • New hard landscaping with paved terrace areas around the pond
  • Better access and entry points to the beach park bringing a sense of arrival
  • Sign posting in the park
  • Possible heritage trail in the park linked to the town
  • Adventure equipment, such as flying fox, high walkways, outdoor gym
  • Path improvements
