Presenting The Grange

Pupils from local primary and secondary schools got involved in a project about the past, present and future of the their town as they explored the history of The Grange cinema and the impact of the new business centre which has been built on its site.

Secondary pupils from Auchenharvie Academy and primary pupils from Ardeer and Glencairn Primary Schools got actively involved in the development of the site of the former Grange cinema - later a bingo hall - where a new business centre, The Grange, has been built. They created a multimedia presentation which tells the story of the history of the site, the development of the business centre and its impact on the town.

The aims of the project were to involve the pupils in the development of the business centre and increase their awareness of  regeneration and the place where they live.

The project included:

  • Exploring the history of the site
  • Talking to local people
  • Learning about the internal and external design of the building
  • Looking at the construction of the business centre
  • Following the process of attracting tenants
  • Primary and secondary pupils working together

The result of pupils' research was  a multimedia presentation which tells the story of the history of the site, the development of the business centre and its potential impact on the town.

Secondary pupils at Auchenharvie Academy benefited from a visit to the school from Scotmid, designed to help pupils understand the skills and attitudes needed for a career with the company. Clare Rajan, Membership & Community Officer at Scotmid, gave the pupils an insight into working with the Co-operative Society, and talked about the broad career opportunities in Scotmid and highlighted the skills essential to build a successful career in the company.

Curriculum for Excellence

The project connects with Curriculum for Excellence, helping pupils build skills for life including teamwork, communication and IT. History, English and environmental studies were also included in the project activity.

Building new partnerships with external organisations including tenants of the centre was also a key element of the project.
