A major piece of public art is being planned as a focus for Irvine town centre. Peter McCaughey has been commissioned to create the new sculpture which will become the focal point for the redeveloped Bridgegate.
Pupils from Greenwood Academy will work with artist Peter McCaughey and film-maker James Alcock to research and record the development of the new art work.
Pupils will produce a multi-media presentation connected to the sculpture. The presentation will tell the story of the piece of art, from selecting the artist right through the design process to installation of the main sculpture in the town centre development.
The students working on the project will have direct access to artist Peter McCaughey and will benefit from video and photography training from James Alcock of McMillan Media.
This project helps young people to develop skills for life including teamwork, communication, creativity and IT. It provides the potential for English work, including written work with a public art theme. Numeracy and design can also to be included in the project activity. Building new partnerships with external organisations will be a key element of the project.
Peter McCaughey made his first visit to Greenwood Academy where he met the group of pupils who will be telling the story of the design and installation of the main piece of art for Irvine town centre. At the workshop Peter talked about his work as an artist and answered questions from the pupils about his plans for the art work. The group also presented their own ideas on how best to tell the story. These include interviews with the public, photography, a profile on Peter and an exhibition of local artists.
