A group of business studies pupils at Greenwood Academy are using The Ayrshire as the context for their learning as part of the Higher Business Studies programme.
The new golf and leisure complex, The Ayrshire, is being developed in the Marine Drive area of Irvine, bringing a major new tourism initiative to an area which is already well known for its outstanding golf facilities.
As work on The Ayrshire progresses, pupils can cover a wide range of business development subjects relating to the planning and building of the development as well as marketing the business.
Because it is about meeting a real business brief, this project covers many of the major CfE themes. Pupils will develop a range of skills relevant for work, including gathering and collating information, language and presentation skills. The project provides considerable partnership opportunities, working with others to gain skills for learning, work and life as well as raising career awareness.
Pupils invited Brian Keating to school to present his business idea. They were able to ask questions and find out more about The Ayrshire golf and leisure complex. The students were invited to attend the public consultation event in January 2012 and hear what the locals had to say. Students now intend to carry out a case study on the project, applying their learning in the context of The Ayrshire. This will include a school community research report to present opinions of their peers, teachers and families.
