Ardrossan town regeneration plan
The vision for Ardrossan: to be an attractive place to live, work and relax by the sea
A theme that ran right through the consultation process in Ardrossan was that the town must become recognised as a place in its own right, not just as a gateway to Arran. Because of this the town plan seeks to create a place where people want to spend time, with the vibrant waterfront and successful marina development playing an important part.
Key issues for Ardrossan:
- The development of water related business and activities
- The provision of attractive and quality residential areas
- The consolidation of a vibrant local centre
- Better access and connections with the sea
A number of early intervention projects were completed early in our programme and are contributing to the revitalisation of the town centre and attracting inward investment to Ardrossan:
Plans underway to expand Ardrossan's marina, which is currently fully occupied. The new plans at Ardrossan North Shore will create more berths in this popular and succesful marina and include a mixed use development of offices, hotel, shops and residential. Ardrossan Quayside is moving ahead with work under way on this prominent hotel and office development.
In the town centre, a number of important properties in key locations are being brought back into use. 78 Princes Street, the former Jack Miller's Hotel, has been redeveloped and the space is now fullyu occupied as an artists' studio and small businesses, creating an important creative hub in the town centre. The Harbour Bar has been demolished and the site landscaped, with options being considered for this prominent site. The former police station has been redeveloped as a new medical centre for the town.
All these developments are contributing to business opportunities in the Irvine Bay area.
Key development areas
Three key development areas have been identified in Ardrossan as the particular areas of the town where we need to focus attention, to maximise the impact of the regeneration process:
- Heart of the town
- Sense of arrival
We believe that concentrating resources and investment in these key development areas will provide the best opportunity to create more activity and a vibrant town centre.
